Match Report
Last season we beat Mark Aizlewood’s team at Celtic Park and after their good performance at Pontypridd in the cup we were hopeful of getting something out of this game against an experienced side fielding 5 starting players over 30, but we suffered a rude awakening as Town scored 2 goals in each half to register a 4-0 win which took them to joint top of the league and us to joint bottom.
On a threadbare sun-drenched pitch Town took the lead in the 13th minute. A corner by Cummings was headed back across goal where Liam Thomas stepped back and hooked the ball into the net. Keyon Reffell increased the lead on 25 minutes when keeper Idzl’s long ball was slipped to Keyon Reffell by Tobias Jones to slide the ball into the net. Our only shot on target in the 1st half was a long range effort by Finley Hayman which was easily saved by Idzl.
In the 2nd half Celtic keeper Hooper made two great saves from Jamie Rickard in quick succession before Tom Dyson wrapped up the points in the 64th minute. Cummings played the ball forward to Reffell who flick-headed the ball on to Dyson who sent Hooper the wrong way to score. In the 81st minute we messed up a short goal kick and ex-Academy debutant Evan Maidment unfortunately tripped Giardelli in his attempt to retrieve the situation. Thomas stepped up to score his 2nd goal from the penalty. We had only 2 shots which tested Idzl in the 2nd half – one a close range shot from Maidment and a Gabriel Howells shot which Idzl parried for a corner. The lively Howells showed a lot of sparkle in his 25-minute cameo. In the closing minutes Hooper made a sensational save to deny Reffell.
