Match Report
Cwmbran Celtic were within minutes of acquiring 3 points at Celtic Park which would have put them in pole position at the top of the bottom 5 relegation battle. However, Lido snatched a point with a penalty in the 90th minute to stay ahead of Celtic on goal difference. Celtic had taken the lead in the 45th minute with a goal by Gabriel Howells, his 4th of the season, all scored in 2025. A Lido throw was headed forward firstly by Arthur Furness and then by Cole Doolan into the path of Howells, who ran diagonally towards goal, eluding two defenders and steering a cross shot into the net – a superb effort.
As the game progressed Lido applied the pressure in search of the equaliser and they were rewarded with the penalty goal. After Watkins had made a good save to push a shot away, the ball was twice crossed from the left and both times was headed away but from the second clearance a Lido attacker fell to the ground and a penalty was awarded which veteran midfielder Liam McCreesh struck high into the net. Lido did not sit back for the point and they almost snatched the win when a free kick high into the 6-yard box evaded defenders and attackers and it took a desperate dive to his left by Watkins to push the ball away for a corner – a great save.
In the last month Celtic have drawn each of their 3 home games against bottom 5 teams. All these 5 teams drew their games over the weekend. Celtic remain in 13th place 4 points clear of Goytre United with 3 games to go. Goal difference could prove crucial in the final analysis – Celtic are 4 better than Goytre and 8 better than Penrhiwceiber. Taffs Well are now relegated after 20 seasons in the top tier.
