Cwmbran Celtic’s cup run was ended by a slick performance by Premier League champions and Welsh Cup holders TNS at Celtic Park but the visitors were made to work hard for their quarter final victory by a gutsy display from Celtic. Ryan Brobbel gave TNS the lead converting a cross from the left in the 13th minute. Within a minute Celtic were level. The visitors defence was caught out by Tom Meechan’s low free kick allowing Josh Rippon to steal into the box to slide the ball home. Celtic welcomed Alex Bonthron back on loan from Merthyr Town and the striker cut in from the right to bring a fine save from keeper Connor Roberts. TNS dominated the game with their slick possession but their finishing was awry. They were nearly made to pay for their profligacy when on 37 minutes Lewis Iles had the ball in the net from a Meechan free kick but his effort was ruled out for offside. Lewis Watkins made a fine diving save from Brobbel and the 1st half closed with the scores level.
In the 2nd half Lewis Watkins had a ‘Gordon Banks’ moment when he diverted a close range shot over the bar – a sensational stop. TNS continued to spurn chances and they were indebted to a golden 10 minutes from Brobbel who first brought a save from Watkins, then converted a penalty on 57 minutes conceded for a trip by Rippon, hit the bar, and finally on 65 minutes he completed his hat-trick with a soft back header from a flicked on long throw. Celtic kept fighting and could have had two goals in the closing 5 minutes. Bonthron was dispossessed when there was a 2-man overlap in front of the gaping goal. Then he was clean through but Roberts stood tall to block his shot. Referee Alex McInch had an excellent match befitting his standing as one of the best officials in the FAW.
