Hijambazapo double as Celtic hold on at Brecon

Celtic led 3-0 on their first ever visit to Brecon Corries, then held off a late two-goal fightback to win 3-2.

Cwmbran Celtic made their first ever trip to Brecon Corries expecting a tough game against the team who won the Ardal SE League team of the month award for 4 wins in September. And so it proved. In a most entertaining game Celtic were coasting 3-0 up in the 2nd half but were hanging on to their lead at the close after a late 2-goal fightback from Corries. Celtic welcomed back Finlay Wood after a month out injured.

Corries dominated the early exchanges with left back McAnally and striker Craig Evans linking well. Evans shot over the bar. McAnally raced down the left wing and into the 6-yard box to bring a great block save by Lewis Watkins. McAnally made another storming run down the left and crossed to Mitchell Davies whose shot from 6 yards out was blocked for a corner by a brave challenge by Kian Saunders. Craig Evans was clean through on goal but Watkins made another fine save.

Celtic had been on the receiving end in the opening half hour. Their first chance on goal was started by Urio Hijambazapo. It ended with Munya Mabwe shooting across the goal inches wide. In the 41st minute Celtic took the lead. A glorious trademark long ball out of defence by Saunders found Hijambazapo who skilfully lobbed the ball over the head of advancing veteran keeper Stephen Price. Urio collected the ball as it landed and tapped it into the empty net.

In the 2nd half Craig Evans brought a fine partial save by Watkins who grabbed the ball at the second attempt to deny the onrushing attacker. Mitchell Davies shot just wide of the far post. On 51 minutes Celtic went two up. Evan Maidment made a strong tackle deep in his own half and unleashed a 50 yard lob to Hijambazapo who burst through the middle and lobbed the keeper who had raced out of the penalty area. Urio calmly headed the ball into the net eluding the desperate lunging attempt to clear the ball by Corey Evans. Celtic added a 3rd goal in the 66th minute. Terry Obeng’s long clearance was flicked on by the head of Mabwe. Daniel Camaj and keeper Price collided in a 50-50 challenge. Camaj came out on top. He chased the ball and slid it into the empty net for his 5th successive game with a goal.

Brecon were not giving up. Craig Evans seemed certain to score from close range but was denied by a blinding save by Watkins. In the 80th minute Brecon pulled a goal back. Substitute Joel Evans set the goal up with 3 touches, the last landing at the feet of McAnally who slammed the ball into the net. As the game drew to a close the pendulum swung each way with chances galore. For Celtic Wood fired a free kick straight at the keeper. A Corey Evans free kick was headed inches wide by Joel Evans. Keeper Price denied shots by Maidment and Hijambazapo who both then hit shots inches wide. Watkins capped a fine personal display by saving from substitute Leo Davies and from McAnally.

In the 87th minute Corey Evans was red carded for a second yellow. In the 3rd minute of time added on Brecon scored a second goal. Joel Evans blocked a clearance and played the ball forward where Leo Davies was quickest to react and he slotted the ball into the net.
