Cwmbran Celtic 2 Llantwit Major 2 (FAW Welsh Cup Rd 2)

(Celtic win 3-0 on penalties)

Celtic keeper Joe Regan was Celtic’s saviour in a dramatic finale to the Welsh Cup round 2 tie at the Avondale Motorpark Arena. With just 10 minutes of normal play left in the 2nd half, Llantwit were cruising to victory at 2-0 but Celtic scored twice in those final minutes to take the game to penalties in which Regan made two superb saves to take his team through to the 3rd round. Joe is no stranger to success in the cups having won 3 shoot-outs last season with Cardiff Corinthians.

Spare a thought for Llantwit who outplayed Celtic until the closing minutes, taking a 1st half lead through Josh Morgan and then going 2 up on 77 minutes when, having exchanged passes with Woodington in a superb breakaway, Morgan scored what looked to be the winning goal. Rob Jones’s 55th penalty miss didn’t seem to matter at the time. However, in the 81st minute, Dominic Connor drove in a low cross which Lewis Iles squeezed into the net at the near post. Into the first of the 10 minutes of time added on, Alex Bonthron, striving to get on the end of an Isaac Powell cross, was unceremoniously dumped to the ground by the Llantwit ‘keeper for a penalty which the striker coolly stroked home for the equaliser.

In the penalties, Prangley, Bonthron and Iles all scored for Celtic. For Llantwit Emanuel hit the bar and then Regan twice dived to his left to push away good strikes from Edwards and Miller. What a finish!!
