We achieved our 1st win in the Adran Trophy group stage with an emphatic win at a wet and windy Penybont. The 2-1 scoreline did not reflect Celtic’s superiority. Penybont only had 2 shots of any consequence in the match. We took the lead in the 25th minute when Cerys Shipley played the ball down the middle for Kaitlin Smith to take the ball in her stride and slot the ball into the net. Katilin should have increased the lead when clean through but she dragged her shot wide and Fiona Anthony shot just wide with a shot on the turn. In the 2nd half Fiona was again narrowly wide with a shot across the goal and she then followed a superb skilful trap of a high ball with a shot straight at keeper Bird. Penybont’s first shot was in the 67th minute, Maisey Fahey-Pennell driving a free kick from 30 yards over the bar. In the 73rd minute we went 2-0 ahead when a long ball from Abigal Jones found Alex Cridland on the right wing. Alex drove into the box and unleashed a shot which Bird got her body in the way of but the momentum of the shot forced the ball over the line. Penybont pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute. Another Fahey-Pennell long range free kick hit the bar and deflected clear off Preston but Edie Evans swung the ball back into the goalmouth where Alex Cridland’s valiant attempt to clear off the line ended with the ball skimming off her leg into the net – unjustly called an own goal.
Abigal Jones was chosen for the Adran League team of the week – well done Abigail.
