Cwmbran Celtic Review Easter W/E 1st April 2024

Apr 3, 2024

The 1st team played 2 away games over the Easter weekend. On Good Friday we were well beaten 3-0 at Carmarthen Town. Celtic were missing captain Larcombe & top scorer Bonthron, both suspended for 5 bookings & we failed to score ending a run of 23 successive games in which we had scored in the league. Ironically the last team to prevent us scoring in the league was Carmarthen at Celtic Park last August. Rory Coleman made his debut from the bench.

On Monday Celtic’s 1st team drew 3-3 at Pontardawe Town. Celtic were twice behind but came back to lead 3-2 through goals by Tom Meechan, Josh Hinwood & Alex Bonthron. Alex had a chance to seal the win in the 85th minute but he screwed his penalty wide & Town snatched the equaliser 2 minutes later. Celtic need 3 points from their last 3 home games to avoid the drop.

On Saturday the Reserves drew 4-4 at home to Liswerry. Jack Prosser scored a hat-trick for Celtic to put them 3-2 ahead. The visitors scored 2 goals to lead going into time added on but Tom Barrett scored the equaliser. Celtic slip to 4th in the table.

On Sunday Celtic Youth lost 4-3 at league leaders Risca United. The hosts went 2 up but Jesse Jenkins scored twice to level the scores. Gabriel Howells put Celtic in front & a shock result was on the cards but Risca fought back to equalise and it looked odds on a draw until Risca scored the winner deep into time added on. Celtic remain 3rd in the table.

The Women’s 1st team ended their season against champions Briton Ferry Llansawel who arrived at Celtic Park with a 100% record. Celtic gave the visitors a run for their money and when Eloise Meaney equalised from the penalty spot on 61 minutes Celtic’s tails were up as they strove for the winner. However, the league’s top scorer Alison Witts scored the winner on 87 minutes. Celtic finish the season a creditable 3rd in the table.

The Women’s Development team won an exciting top of the table clash 2-1 at home to league leaders Tranch Ladies. Celtic went ahead with a Teagan Eley penalty, Tranch equalised but Dominque Laida scored the winner on 88 minutes to lift Celtic to 3rd place in the league.
There are still 7 games to go but Celtic are only 3 points behind Tranch with 3 games in hand and a much superior goal difference.
It was good to see former 1st team keeper Megan Davies in goal during her vacation & Georgina Cridland on the side helping out as she recovers from her serious injury.

The Vets 40s were 2-1 up in the Shield going into stoppage time through goals by Rob Surtees and Symon Bailey but Pentyrch Rangers scored in time added on to snatch a 2-2 draw.
